Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek - 6 Days

Upon your arrival in Paro (2,250 m / 7,382 ft), a scenic 54 km/1-hour drive will take you to Thimphu. As you step into the mountain kingdom of Bhutan, our team will warmly greet you and facilitate your transfer to a centrally located hotel in Thimphu. Bhutan's modern capital, Thimphu, stands as a unique blend of contemporary development and ancient traditions, serving as the nexus for government, religion, and commerce. Surprisingly, with a population of around 90,000, it remains the world's only capital city without a traffic light. Later, a leisurely walk around the local marketplace, just a few minutes from the hotel, introduces you to the authentic Bhutanese arts and crafts at the local craft bazaar.

Embark on the inaugural day of your trek, commencing with an early morning drive from Thimphu to Genekha Village, a picturesque journey spanning approximately 45 minutes. Notably recognized for its production of matsutake and chanterelle mushrooms, Genekha village sets the stage for your adventure.

The trek commences with a brief descent to the river, guiding you through terraced fields and a serene path adorned with coniferous trees and alpine flora. Crossing the river marks the beginning of a gradual ascent, leading to a rock platform that unveils a breathtaking panorama of the valley. Continuing for approximately two hours, you'll arrive at Gur (3290m), a vast expanse of yak pastures. A short walk amidst a profusion of wildflowers brings you to your campsite.

As the sun sets over Gur, the tranquility of the surroundings provides a serene backdrop for your overnight stay at the tented camp.

Embark on the second leg of your trek from Gur to Labatama, covering a distance of 12 kilometers over a 4-5 hour span. The trail guides you across high ridges, unveiling the rugged and distinctive vegetation that defines Bhutan. During the spring season, the landscape comes alive with the vibrant hues of wildflowers and flourishing asparagus. Rhododendron-clad meadows paint a picturesque panorama, a visual treat for every trekker.

A significant milestone in your journey is the Paga Labsta pass, standing proudly at an elevation of 4,250m/13,943ft. From this vantage point, you're treated to awe-inspiring views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, a sight that etches itself into the memory.

Descending from the pass, the entire Dagala mountain range reveals itself, creating a breathtaking spectacle. As you traverse meadows and yak herder camps, a gradual descent leads you to the Labatama valley. Climbing steadily, you'll encounter Utsho Tsho Lake, also known as 'Gewa Tsho' or Turquoise Lake. Nestled at an elevation of 4300m/14,107ft, this pristine lake is renowned for its abundance of Golden Trout fishes. Your stroke of luck extends to camping right beside the lake, creating an enchanting overnight experience.

Under the vast Bhutanese sky, surrounded by the tranquility of Labatama, your tented camp offers a perfect haven for a night immersed in nature's embrace.

Embark on a day that promises the trek's next major highlight – the towering mountainous landscapes surrounding you. Following breakfast, your journey commences with a climb along the western side of Dala Tsho Lake, perched majestically at an altitude of 4520m/14,829ft. The panoramic views from this vantage point are nothing short of mesmerizing, leaving you yearning for more time to soak in Bhutan's unparalleled beauty.

As you ascend to an altitude of 4,720m/15,485ft, a more elevated position unveils an even grander perspective of the mountains that adorn the horizon. Mt. Everest in Nepal graces the scene, offering one of the finest panoramic views. Portions of Mt. Kanchenjunga, straddling Sikkim and Nepal, come into focus. The Bhutanese peaks, including Mt. Jumolhari, Mt. Jichu Drake, Mt. Tshering Gang, Mt. Tsende Gang, Mt. Gangche Ta, Mt. Khangbum, and Mt. Masang Gang, stand tall, visible in all their glory.

Descending from this panoramic perch, you'll pass through Yak herder huts, eventually leading to the Doccha Chhu river. During winter, the locals vacate their huts to escape the biting cold, leaving the landscape serene. Following the high slope along the river, navigate ascents and descents until you reach Panka (4000m/13,123ft). Set against the backdrop of the Bhutanese mountains, your campsite offers a well-deserved rest and a night under the stars.

As night falls over Panka, the soothing sounds of nature accompany your sleep in the tented camp, creating a serene and memorable experience.

Embark on the final leg of your trek, transitioning from Panka to Chamgang, marking the culmination of an exhilarating journey. The trail presents a series of passes, each rewarding the effort with breathtaking vistas. Endurance is repaid with panoramic views that stretch across the rugged landscapes, a testament to the beauty of Bhutan's high-altitude terrain.

As you traverse this terrain, be captivated by the allure of the Himalayan Blue Poppy, Bhutan's national flower, flourishing even in the harshest freezing conditions. The trek unfolds with a lunch stop at a trail junction leading to two destinations: Talakha and Wangduephodrang. Following lunch, the journey continues with a climb to the final pass of the trek, Tale La, standing proudly at 4,180m/13,713ft. From this vantage point, marvel at the views of the Dagala range and catch a glimpse of the modern city of Thimphu.

Descending through a forest adorned with birch, juniper, spruce, and rhododendron, the trail leads to the ancient Talakha Goempa, an architectural gem dating back to the 15th century. Perched at an altitude of 3080m/10,104ft, this unique structure stands amidst lush highlands, offering a glimpse into Bhutan's rich heritage.

Continuing through an apple orchard, the trek concludes in the village of Chamgang. From here, a drive takes you to Paro, where you'll be transferred to your hotel. After a refreshing break, immerse yourself in the charm of Paro's streets, adorned with a blend of modern and ancient buildings.
