The Shivapuri Hike from Kathmandu is one of the most rewarding day hikes for travelers who want to combine nature, physical activity and mountain scenery without leaving the Kathmandu Valley for an overnight trek.
The hike takes you into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, an important protected natural area on the northern edge of Kathmandu Valley. The landscape changes quickly after leaving the city, with forested trails, fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings replacing the urban environment.
The route commonly begins around Budhanilkantha and climbs through the forest toward the hills of Shivapuri. Depending on the route selected, hikers may pass Nagi Gumba, a well-known Buddhist nunnery situated in the forested hills.
Continuing upward, the trail becomes more demanding as you approach the higher elevations. The effort is rewarded by panoramic views from the Shivapuri area, including Kathmandu Valley and, when visibility is good, the Himalayan ranges.
The hike is ideal for travelers who want a more adventurous Kathmandu day hike than a short sightseeing walk. It requires reasonable fitness, but no technical mountaineering skills or previous trekking experience.
